EMIlY IS

A MAGNET FOR MIRACLES

A miraculous midlife comedy series.

The universe has granted miraculous powers to the most unlikely, unqualified woman in L.A.

It may soon come to regret it.

Emily, a broke, menopausal, out-of-work actress, single mom, and lovable disaster, is granted miraculous powers by the universe. Now the least qualified woman imaginable must wield them without making her already disastrous life worse and face the one miracle she can’t manifest: belief in herself.

Why This Story

For years, Emily has tried to manifest a better life. She reads the books, fills out the journals, listens to the podcasts, repeats the mantras, and makes the vision boards.

Literally nothing has worked.

Then something magical happens.

Emily discovers that she has been granted the power to create small miracles. At first, the power is completely unpredictable. She has no idea why she was chosen, how to summon it, what its limits are, or what might happen when she tries to use it.

More importantly, receiving a spiritual gift does not inspire a spiritual awakening. Emily remains exactly the same person she was before: broke, overwhelmed, impulsive, desperate to be liked, and entirely unequipped to carry supernatural power responsibly.

What she does have is a lightbulb moment.

She needs money.

Emily changes her Instagram bio, declares herself a manifestation expert, and begins capitalizing on a gift she barely understands.

People believe her.

They bring her their problems, their money, and their faith.

As her audience grows from followers into believers, a woman who cannot manage her own life becomes the most unlikely spiritual leader imaginable and, eventually, the head of something that looks increasingly like a cult.

As Emily sets out to monetize the miracles, the gift begins demanding something from her. She has to learn how to carry it, take responsibility for what it creates, and grow into the person everyone else believes she is.

The universe has given Emily undeniable proof that it believes in her. Strangers begin believing in her too. Her deeper journey is learning to recognize the power and value in herself without needing the universe, her followers, or the miracles to prove it.

Belief in herself may be the one miracle Emily cannot manifest on command.

The Series

EMILY IS A MAGNET FOR MIRACLES is being independently produced as a short-form Instagram series.

Emily Is a Magnet for Miracles is being independently produced as a short-form Instagram series. This first season is also the beginning of a larger television property.

Grounded, intimate, and deeply funny, the series lives in the tonal world of Enlightened, Somebody Somewhere, Better Things, and Doll & Em. Its comedy comes from recognizable human behavior, emotional need, terrible judgment, and Emily’s inability to leave an uncomfortable situation alone.

The magic expands the story without changing its emotional reality.

Why This Story

Midlife Women On Screen

Women in our fifties rarely see ourselves reflected in film and television. At the very moment our lives are becoming more complicated, more precarious, and frankly, more interesting, we’re largely disappearing from the screen.

Emily Is a Magnet for Miracles puts one of these women at the center of the story: a woman performing adulthood, parenthood, and success while privately having no idea how to hold any of it together.

This magical comedy explores what happens when the universe believes in a woman before she believes in herself.

Who It’s About

Meet Emily Wilder

Emily Wilder is a menopausal single mother in her mid-fifties living on the edge of survival. Once a working actress, she hasn’t worked in years. She now gets by on unemployment, an EBT card, dwindling residual checks, and whatever odd jobs she can find.

Her life is one big performance: adulthood, parenthood, success. Her social media presence is the best performance of her career. Inside the frame: health, wellness, gratitude, alignment.

Just outside the frame, her life is a complete train wreck.

For years, Emily has tried to manifest a better life. She reads the books, fills out the journals, listens to the podcasts, repeats the mantras, and makes the vision boards. Literally nothing has worked.

Then one day, the universe looks at Emily and thinks, You know what? Let’s cut this woman a break. And gives her the power to create actual miracles. A stunning lapse of judgment, it will soon come to regret.

Broke and desperate, Emily gets exactly the wrong brilliant idea: monetize the miracles. Soon, followers become believers and Emily finds herself in the middle of an even bigger dumpster fire of a life - one that for legal purposes, is definitely not a cult.

The least qualified woman imaginable has been handed miraculous powers with no instructions and every opportunity to make a spectacular mess of them.

And while Emily can create miracles, the one miracle she can’t manifest is the one she needs the most: belief in herself.

EMILY IS A
MAGNET FOR MIRACLES

to life

EMILY WAGNER
Creator, Writer, Producer, Actress

“I’ve spent most of my life performing. As an actress, obviously. But also performing adulthood, motherhood, success, and the idea that everything is going really well. And I know I’m not the only woman doing it.

Women in our fifties rarely see ourselves reflected in film and television. At the very moment our lives are becoming more complicated, more precarious, and frankly, more interesting, we’re largely disappearing from the screen.

So I set out to create the kind of series I wanted to see.

EMILY IS A MAGNET FOR MIRACLES is about a woman who appears to have her life together while privately feeling completely lost, with no idea what comes next. I have a feeling my midlife sisters might recognize themselves in this contradiction.”

Emily Wagner is an actress, writer, director, producer, and independent filmmaker who has been creating her own work since the beginning of her career.

Emily co-wrote and starred in Blah Blah Blah with Julie Delpy. Directed by Delpy, the short premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen at Toronto, Telluride, and festivals around the world. It marked the beginning of a long creative collaboration between the two women.

Emily and Delpy later created and starred in Looking for Jimmy, an experimental independent feature shot continuously over twenty-four hours on the streets of Los Angeles. Looking for Jimmy premiered at AFI Fest and continued through an international festival and theatrical run.

Emily has starred in three feature films that premiered at Sundance. She starred in The Talent Given Us, written and directed by her brother, filmmaker Andrew Wagner. The daring, genre-bending film cast Emily, her sisters, and their parents as versions of themselves, pushing the line between documentary and fiction until it nearly disappeared. The film won the Jury Prize at CineVegas and Best First Feature at the Traverse City Film Festival.

She returned to Sundance as the female lead in Chronic Town, starring alongside JR Bourne, Garry Marshall, Paul Dooley, and Lin Shaye. She returned to Sundance again, starring in Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in New York, opposite Delpy and Chris Rock, marking her third feature-film premiere at Sundance and another chapter in her decades-long collaboration with Delpy.

On television, Emily played paramedic Doris Pickman throughout the entire fifteen-season run of ER. Her other screen work includes Todd Phillips’s Due Date, opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, as well as Criminal Minds, Judging Amy, Liza on Demand, and Netflix’s On the Verge, which reunited her with Delpy.

Long before original digital series became commonplace, Emily created Motherhoodlum, one of the first original comedy series made for YouTube. Across twenty episodes, she wrote, directed, produced, edited, and performed in the series, which offered an honest, unruly, and very funny look at the realities of new motherhood. It was picked up by Manaday and developed into a pilot. It also continued a thread that has run through all of Emily’s work: women trying to hold everything together while life refuses to cooperate.

Emily has always believed in self-agency as an actor, writer, and director. From independent shorts and Sundance films to an early YouTube comedy series, she has spent her career creating the roles and stories she wanted to see rather than waiting for someone else to make them.

Her newest series, Emily Is a Magnet for Miracles, brings all of that history together. Emily created, wrote, directs, produces, and stars in the magical comedy about a broke, menopausal, out-of-work actress and single mother whose life is one enormous performance: adulthood, parenthood, success, and the appearance that everything is going beautifully.
